Leading with Questions   Michael J. Marquardt

Why this book?

I chose this book, because I am interested in coaching and leading teams. My interest in how to use questions in leadership better.

Notes

In this thought-provoking book, Michael Marquardt delves into the critical role that questions play in effective leadership. He contends that one of the most significant failings of leaders is their lack of curiosity – a failure to question and inquire. By exploring the power of asking the right questions and actively listening to the answers, Marquardt provides valuable insights for leaders seeking to find optimal solutions and drive positive change.

Marquardt begins by drawing a compelling analogy to the Titanic. On April 14, 1912, the supposedly unsinkable luxury liner sank in the North Atlantic during its maiden voyage. Despite concerns among some of the ship’s planners and designers, no one dared to question the ship’s safety. Fear of appearing foolish or rocking the boat (pun intended) stifled any dissenting voices. The result? A disaster that could have been averted had the right questions been asked.

Marquardt emphasizes that leaders must cultivate curiosity. They should actively seek out questions and encourage dialogue within their teams. Curiosity drives innovation, uncovers hidden problems, and fosters a culture of continuous improvement. When leaders ask questions, they demonstrate humility, openness, and a genuine interest in learning from others.

Asking questions is only half of the equation; listening is equally crucial. Effective leaders actively listen to the responses they receive. They don’t merely wait for their turn to speak; instead, they engage in meaningful dialogue. By truly understanding their team members’ perspectives, leaders can make informed decisions and build stronger relationships.

The book provides practical strategies for incorporating questioning into leadership practices:

The Socratic Approach: Borrowing from Socrates, leaders can use probing questions to stimulate critical thinking and encourage self-reflection.

Open-Ended Questions: Instead of closed-ended questions that yield yes/no answers, leaders should ask open-ended questions that invite deeper exploration.

Listening Intently: Leaders must actively listen, suspend judgment, and create a safe space for honest responses.

Questioning Assumptions: Leaders challenge assumptions and explore alternative viewpoints.
