True Story of a Community That Learns by Doing

Niina Leinonen, Johannes Partanen, Petri Palviainen

I first read this book during my second year, but it’s only now that I’m writing an essay about it. Revisiting it reminded me how much I love being part of this community and, honestly, how much I enjoy studying at this school. It’s amaaaazin!!!

Every time someone asks me what exactly I’m studying and why I like going to this school, it’s hard to explain hahah. But after reading about how we learn, maybe some people will get it. So, here it is!

The Journey of Learning by Doing: A Simple Tale with a Big Lesson

Sometimes, learning isn't about books, lectures, or exams. It’s about rolling up your sleeves and diving right in.

This story is about a community that figures things out together, as a team! – no high-tech gadgets or a fancy learning system, just good old practical experience. So, let's break this down in easy terms !

The Charm of Doing Things Together

The central idea of the book is simple: when people work together, they learn more effectively. Imagine you're trying to bake a cake. You have no idea where to start, but then someone brings the eggs, another person knows how to whisk, and someone else throws in a dash of creativity with sprinkles. By the end, you've baked not just a cake but learned a little something from everyone involved. This is the beauty of community-based learning—no one knows everything, but together, the magic happens.

Learning Without the Pressure

One of the best parts of learning by doing is that it takes the stress out of the process. There are no pop quizzes or surprise exams waiting to ambush you . It's all about trial and error. And let’s face it, making mistakes is a part of life. This community embraces that fact. If something doesn’t work, they tweak it, adjust it, and try again. It's like playing with LEGO – if the tower falls, you just build it again but better. The beauty is in learning as you go, which is both liberating and very empowering.

Building Relationships, Not Just Skills

While the community learns new skills, they are also building relationships. Picture it: you're trying to fix something with a neighbor, and while doing so, you swap stories, share laughs, and sometimes even disagree. But by the end, not only have you fixed whatever needed fixing, you've built a friendship too. This is a massive win in the tiimi approach to learning. It's not just about becoming a pro at something; it's about forming connections along the way.

Mistakes Are Your Best Friend, yeaaah

Okay, let's admit it: messing up can be embarrassing. But in Tiimi, mistakes are your best friend. Why? Because every time you fail, you learn something new. Imagine trying to ride a bike. The first few falls are rough, but with each try, you're closer to mastering it. The same goes for this community – they learn by messing up, and that’s perfectly fine. In fact, it's encouraged! Who knew that falling on your face could actually be part of a genius learning strategy?

The Fun Factor

Let’s be real—learning from a textbook can be really boring and annoying. But when you learn by doing, there's fun involved. It’s like learning to swim by jumping in the pool instead of reading about swimming strokes. Sure, you’ll flail around at first, but eventually, you'll be gliding through the water. The book shows us that this kind of hands-on experience brings a sense of excitement and adventure to the process of learning.

Learning is Living!!!

This book shows us that education isn’t always about sitting down with a book or attending a formal class. Sometimes, it’s about getting your hands dirty, working with others, and figuring things out along the way. The lessons aren’t just about acquiring skills but also about growing as a person and forming bonds with those around you. So, whether you're fixing a sink, painting a wall, or learning to play guitar, remember: it's okay to make mistakes, and it’s even better to have fun doing it. Because, at the end of the day, learning is living.

So let's live and learn!!
