The Team Academy: a true story of a community that learns by doing


Description of the book

This book was written by Niina Leinonen (graduate of the Jyväskylä Polytechnic Team Academy), Johannes Partanen (Head Coach and Director of Team Academy) and Petri Palviainen (graduate of the Team Academy). It was released in 2004.

Why did I chose this book

This book is like one of the most recommended books in Team Academy. All coaches recommend it, all team members who finished it, were telling me about it. Ofcourse that was not the only reason. Another was, that I had finished (you could say successfully) my first year here. But I still felt like I didn’t know much about what I am studying on my own. Thanks to the trip to Finland and meeting some local students, some of my thoughts have been answered, but it also built up my curiosity. I told myself, well maybe the book that one of the head coaches wrote, and is named after this program, might help.

What did I learn from the book

This whole program, this curriculum is our one chance, to prepare ourselves for better future. We don’t want to be a nothing knowing machines, that can only go work in some warehouse after school. We want to develop and learn, we want to leave school with clear mindset, some achievement, self-leadership capabilities and creativity, to stand on our own. Current state of many schools doesn’t allow that. This is why this whole program was made. Even thought we sometimes behave like it is just annoying us, I believe that using the time and team we have here at our hands, can only help us develop. We learn when we do something. “Had an awful project? … well you can know reflect and do better. Had a good project? … congrats, go and do something else.” I want to leave this school with experience, so that when I finish, I won´t be stressed out about, what will I do next.

I did not think being in the same place really matters. When I had no or just one project, that we handled by zoom calls I felt that we did good. Now I get what we were missing to be great. Last year we could not really be meeting in shared premises. We couldn’t really setup a culture around us, since we only saw each other in small boxes on monitors. Sharing information and knowledge, asking questions, working together, planning, distributing information, all these things are really hard to do when you see each other only online once in a while online. I feel like we really miss some shared premises where we could all wander around and do all of those activities. Hopefully now, in the new year there will be more possibilities like that.

“Do you want to go for a journey round the world, and also learn some marketing?” 24 people reacted, and the first team was born.

Why was this so easy, yet working? Building a vision like this took my team such a long time, and in Finland, they pretty much started with it. Ofcourse if we want to build a vision for a company, that will take time. But as a team answering a question about “what do we want to create?” should not be that difficult. I personally love the idea of a vision that Ville told us about in Finland. His teams’ vision was something like “We will all drink rum in Caribbean together.” Not everybody really loves rum, nor Caribbean. But the statement of what they wanted to achieve, became the words that motivated them all to succeed. And they did.
